If you lose your phone, how confident are you that someone won’t have access to your entire life? Maybe your phone has a passcode, pin, or pattern, but as this video by DNews explains, lock screens aren’t that effective at keeping out pesky intruders. Still, some are better than others.

To begin with, most people don’t have passwords, pins, or swipe patterns that are difficult to guess. You can have multiple encryptions to add an extra level of security, but DNews suggests a more basic, better approach: go with alphanumeric passwords. They have exponentially more combinations for someone to guess than a four-digit pin or a nine-point swipe pattern does, which has about 10,000 and 400,000 combinations, respectively. As for using your fingerprint? That’s easy to get around, too.

This doesn’t mean you should just forego having a lock screen. Just don’t unlock your phone in plain sight. And if you have an iPhone, choose a longer passcode and on Android you can customize your lock screen for security.
