GenderEQ Tracks Which Gender Speaks the Most During Meetings

iPhone: Ever been curious about exactly how much the men and women at your office speak during a meeting? GenderEQ can track that and break it down into percentages.

When you start a meeting (or any conversation, really), turn GenderEQ on, and it’ll attempt to analyze the voices in the room as either male or female. As the conversation goes on, the percentages bounce up and down depending on who is speaking. Since this is just a computer, GenderEQ can only recognize voice frequency, which means it trips over people whose voices don’t fit gender stereotypes, but it’s still interesting to look at.

After running it through a few tests, GenderEQ does a decent enough job of differentiating between speakers, though it certainly shouldn’t be viewed as empirical data. Even just speaking to it by myself in a quiet room led to a 80/20 split, which means I must occasionally hit some higher frequencies. Regardless, GenderEQ is more about attempting to get a better idea of how gender dynamics work in an office, and to that end it does its job.
